The Musical Year That Was 2015

A new year is upon us, so you know what that means…… Reflection time! As you look back on 2015- the love, the loss, the triumphs and the struggles, pause for a moment and answer one very important question. What song was playing in the background? Be it Reggae or Dancehall, the year was filled with songs that were the soundtracks to our lives. Some topped charts and dominated airwaves, while others were sound system favorites. Here is a recap of what 2015 sounded like in the musical drama of Jamaica’s reggae/ dancehall industry.

It was a good year, Christopher martin made me feel very, very, very, very (4 very’s) important. Why? Cause “#I’m a big deal”. Yea, not everyone like this but “Who The Hell Cares”?  Call Demarco and let us cheer to your haters; follow Miss Kitty and tell them “A-bay, me never like you first, lalalalalaah”; or follow Romaine Virgo and Assassin and worry not, cause they shall surely ‘Fade away’. But if you are anything like Popcaan and I, you would not have these issues cause ‘Weed Is My Best Friend’ and you know weed gives no trouble. Side note, I heard that Jah Cure may have The Cure for the ailment-bad mind.

While some were busy losing friends, others were finding love. Omi found his “Cheerleader”; Dexta Daps found someone too, though she seemed to be cheering “7/11” men; and Shaggy told his girl “I Need Your Love”. Wow, love is so ‘Powerful’ but do not take my word for it, ask Taurus Riley, Ellie Golding and Major Lazer. Apparently it is also something to be “Jealous Over”, right Tifa and Dexta? I-octane got the memo, and tried for a piece of Vanessa Bling’s love but she told him she “Cyaa Do it” because her “Future Guaranteed” with someone else. But do not get complacent because of guarantees, take notes and Spice things up with the creative use of your “Needle Eye Tun Tun” or he might cheat on you with an “Ugly Girl” like Ikaya’s boo. If all else fails, you can become a ‘Cheerful Giver’ and share him with Ishawna (I hear God gives out blessings for that). Question, are they sharing the same guy? Busy Signal maybe? He did make mention of “Text Message” he received from unnamed females. But IDK, DWL, TTYL on that one.

While, Busy had his hands full with the ladies, “Champion boy” Alkaline was “All About The Money.” I wonder if he did a C-T scan would it say “Money On Me Brain” like Vybz Kartel? Money is good and all, but Mavado reminded them that, “Money Can’t Buy Life”. Vershon kept it real too “Inna Real Life” telling us that him “Used to Hungry”. Come on Dexta, you could have offered him something from “Shabba Madda Pot”. Maybe some “Pressure” red peas, cow head, oxtail. Kartel, him can get some of the food?

A moment of silence for Toya and J Capri, two young artiste whose full potential we’ll never see. It touched Lady saw so much, she said to God be the glory. And rightfully so Sister Marion, because when all is said and done all we have is “Jesus in the end”

There you have it, a musical year in review.  One filled with reggae/dancehall songs and moments we’ll not soon forget. So cheers to 2015, you were on fleek, the songs were turnt and you served tea like no other. Let’s continue to give thanks inna real life, and see who will be real rich in 2016.
