Wow, the ink is yet to dry on 2017 (I’m sure it’s still 2016
somewhere), but Popcaan has already written, voiced and released a song. The
song being labeled a ‘diss track’ titled “Stray Dog” has just, and I do mean
just been released via youtube. And boy,
he held nothing back or left anything to the imagination.
Vividly violent lyrics walk listeners through various scenarios
in which he kills a so called ‘stray dog’, hence the name of the song. With lyrics
ranging from ‘throat slashing’, to ‘cracking skull like calabash’, to ‘Shot a
play inna you head like ludi’ all leading to the hook, “suck you madda dog, you
no bad like unruly” it is safe to say he is taking no hostages into 2017.
With over 18,000 views on youtube and the commentary to
match, Popcaan has definitely started the year with a bang (no pun intended).
His supporters have already given the song their stamp of approval, while fans
of Alkaline, who the song is allegedly about are already firing back disses on
the deejays behalf.
The song, seemingly aimed at Alkaline (with whom the deejay
has been ‘beefing’) references “pulling auto squeeze inna you contact lenses” (Alkaline’s
tattooed black eyes are rumored to be contact lenses). Raising the question, is
Popcaan finally ready to prove himself against Alkaline? Is he ready to prove
who the ‘real man’ of the moment is? As, eventually someone will have to pick up
where Vybz Kartel left off, is this Popcaan’s way of throwing his hat in the
ring?
Whatever the reason for this song, the proverbial stone has
been thrown. And in a society already plagued with violence, it is hoped that
the response will be a musical one. After all, these songs are meant to be mere
entertainment for a people, not a preview of realities to come.
